That had to be the funniest thing to ever happen in sports commentary. It's like this guy's whole merge into super stardom was just set up for a giant joke.

Sorry for using your post for this but you the hockey god so i gotta ask this question here. why do they fight in hockey. Or are allowed to with every other sport tryin to cut down on concussion and players injury. i haven't watched hockey since Jagr played for the Pens. flipping through the channels yesterday i come across Bos vs Min i think it was. The ref drops the puck and immediately 2 players drop their sticks and gloves like it was synchronized and start doing the macarena around each other. skating in circles looking like a praying mantis having a seizure. then they grab one another to a hugging stance and start throwing punches. very few connecting. all the players just standing there watching like its a newly wed couple having their first dance. my 7yr old gived me the WTF are they doing look. Maybe this isn't how it always is but i always thought maybe a player got hit with a cheap high stick, gets on his feet, chase the guy down and get into a good ole back alley brawl. not some organized tip for tap mingling. Does the whole team ever get into it. i mean if one of my brothers is scrapping we all scrapping weather he's wrong or not. after they fought if u want to call it that. fans cheered. both go to penalty box. game resumes and its like nothin ever happened. From an outsider who never watches hockey it looked pointless to me but maybe there's a reason this goes on

Takeo sports has a theory for why there aren't as many bench clearing brawls anymore. I think there are all different types of fights, some are organized, some are Avery sneaking up and taking a cheap shot for a KO.

I'll give you the answer for why there are fights in hockey, more specifically why it's allowed and not frowned upon like all other sports. The simple answer is because it's played on ice. First of all there's a different element when you are wearing blades on your feet which cut into the surface, as opposed to running on a floor. You don't have as much traction to load up a punch as you would on your feet, so most of the fight is tugging. Pushing a guy backwards will take a lot off his punch also. Guys will feel the need to defend themselves from contact by fighting because of this ice element. Contact in football doesn't have the same slip and slide vibe. Players also have sticks, which can be a tool for goals or a pseudo weapon, which also amps the fight or flight atmosphere. Finally being a player on the ice, even a pro, you still have the same mind set you were raised as a player. A lot of these guys have never left the hockey environment, and grew up in desolate skating camps and on travel teams. You notice when the puck is loose in front of the net, these giant 250lb guys all get ready to dive and pile up. It's kind of silly but if you've ever been on the ice you know the feeling and it's pretty helpless. This is why some people can't understand hockey by watching on television until they go to the game and hear the sound of skates cutting up the ice and realize what makes the game so different.
